Canada Waits For Christmas – December 9th

Welcome (back) to my Advent calendar of Canadian art and culture. I’m glad you’re here.
Today I found Maud Lewis, a Nova Scotia folk artist, crammed in behind a flimsy cardboard door. She was born in Yarmouth, NS in the early 1900s and lived until 1970. She died in Marshalltown, NS where she had lived with her husband Everett Lewis whom she’d married in 1938. I had the opportunity to see a Maud Lewis exhibit in Hull, Quebec at the Canadian Museum of History in the late 1990s. It was great! I’m trying to remember if I ever saw another art exhibit featuring one artist. I don’t think I ever have.

In 2017 a movie called Maudie was made about Maud Lewis (Sally Hawkins) and her relationship with her husband Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke). Here’s the movie’s trailer:
We’ll stay in Nova Scotia today with the music stowed away behind this Advent calendar door marked December 9th. Joel Plaskett is based in Halifax, NS, and has written and performed a lot of awesome Canadian songs. This is one of them. I love sad songs that are peppy and happy. 🙂
“I could hear your motor humming, I wanted you to stay
But I could see this coming from a hundred miles away”
Thanks for dropping by! Be sure to check out some work by both of these great Nova Scotia artists. Take care! – Lori
