Bees at Work

And here are our finally-ripe apples – here because of the bees! We planted these trees four years ago and this spring they blossomed. THEN, for two nights, the temperatures dipped down below zero. Knowing that the cool temperatures would freeze those delicate blossoms, we wrapped the tall, narrow trees in burlap and sheets to protect the flowers. It looked really strange and it worked!

Lots of people cover flowers to protect them from the cold but this is the first time I have ever heard of covering a tree. I’m sure that gave your neighbours something to talk about.

Hi Glen! Yes, one of our younger neighbours hates the mess that falling apples make on the lawn. She thought we’d covered the trees to discourage the bees from pollinating the blossoms. I love bees and I love flowers. Never would I discourage either! – Lori
