Winter Wonderland – A Photo Blog

I realize that in some places the season is still autumn, late autumn, but fall nonetheless. Here in east-central Alberta, we are deep into winter. Looking for inspiration, I sifted through my photos to find a few that describe the best parts of winter around here. Then I searched for quotes to give our hearts a lift as we move into what promises to be a long winter following a difficult year. Take care and keep warm. ~ Lori

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire; it is the time for home.”

– Edith Sitwell

“Snow was falling,

so much like stars

filling the dark trees

that one could easily imagine

its reason for being was nothing more

than prettiness.”

“Thank goodness for the first snow, it was a reminder–no matter how old you became and how much you’d seen, things could still be new if you were willing to believe they still mattered.”

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, ‘Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”

  1. LOL Lori, I’m with Carl Reiner on this one. Except for one brief flirtation with Arizona (lived there for 5 weeks that crossed from October to November), I have spent my entire life in snowy places, BUT I draw the line at the Vermont (southern) border. I don’t know how you do it–of course, having nationalized healthcare helps–but 4 months of winter is MORE than enough for me. By mid-March, the weather better be routinely getting into the mid-40s, or else… My idea of perfect winter is mid-50s with a little “dip” for a light snow on Christmas Eve.

    • The nationalized health care is great but there are a number of voices here against it. (Not mine.) Yes, we can only dream of warmer winters and have, pre-pandemic, enjoyed trips to warmer climates. Now we’re really stuck in the snow so we’d better enjoy it! Take care, Amy, and thanks for commenting. – Lori
